Ukrainian Packaging Association launched a pilot post-consumer packaging waste collection project in the city of Vyshhorod, 20 km from the capital Kiev. Nearly 100 waste containers are placed in the city to be used by its inhabitants. The separately collected packaging waste – paper, glass, cartons, plastic and metal – is transported then to the waste sorting plant and the collected materials are sold to various recyclers in Ukraine. The project is financed by the key members of the Ukraine Packaging Association – Coca-Cola Hellenic, PepsiCo Ukraine, Tetrapak, Elopak Fastiv and Can-Pack Ukraine. The strategic plan and the business plan of the pilot project was worked out by the CEEREC consultant.

The project aim is to recycle 50% of the packaging waste generated by the city inhabitants by 2020 and to promote the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) concept. Currently, EPR based packaging waste law has been drafted and is registered in the Parliament.

Ukrainian government approved on November 8th, 2017 the National Waste Strategy, which also includes plans to introduce EPR based legislation for the selected waste streams, including packaging waste, WEEE, oils, etc.
